Sample event image St Peter’s church, Berkhamsted, is celebrating Germanic culture – especially its music – with its annual Oktoberfest. This year we celebrate the town’s heritage through a free performance of Handel’s Foundling anthem.

Oktoberfest, which is taking place on the weekend of 23 and 24 September, will see Handel’s dramatic choral being performed in the Ashlyns School chapel on Saturday afternoon at 4.30 pm, accompanied by a festival Hallelujah chorus to which anyone is welcome to join.

Handel wrote the Foundling Anthem in 1749 to help raise money for children at Thomas Coram’s London Foundling Hospital (later rebuilt in Berkhamsted and eventually becoming Ashlyns School).

There will be a wine tasting of specially chosen German wines at the Court House on Saturday evening at 7.30pm. This will be followed on Sunday by a traditional Bavarian breakfast at 11am after a performance of a Buxtehude Cantata during St Peter’s 9.30am church service.
